Hoodie Fabric Weight Guide: Cotton, Fleece and GSM

Understand hoodie fabric weight in GSM and compare cotton, polyester fleece, blends, warmth, durability and layering before buying.

GSM means grams per square metre and describes fabric mass, not the weight of the complete hoodie. It is a useful comparison when two garments use a similar construction, but it does not measure softness, warmth, durability or quality on its own.

A 320gsm cotton-rich work hoodie, a lighter brushed fleece and a heavy oversized zip hoodie can all suit different wardrobes. Use GSM together with fibre content, knit, lining, fit and the conditions in which you plan to wear it.

What GSM tells you

GSM provides the mass of one square metre of fabric. Within the same fabric family, a higher number usually indicates a more substantial cloth. That can affect drape, perceived warmth, opacity and durability, but finishing and construction still matter.

Retailers do not always publish GSM, and figures from different fabric types are not directly equivalent. A dense smooth knit and a lofted brushed fleece can feel different even when their stated GSM is similar.

Compare cotton, polyester and blended fabrics

Cotton-rich hoodies often have a softer natural feel and can be comfortable for everyday wear. Polyester can improve shape retention, drying speed and resistance to abrasion, while an all-polyester fleece may feel light for its warmth.

Blends aim to balance these properties. The result depends on percentages, yarn, knit and finish, so avoid judging a garment only by which fibre appears first on the label. Check washing temperature and tumble-drying guidance because heat can affect shrinkage and surface appearance.

Look inside: brushed fleece vs loopback

Brushed fleece has a raised inner surface that traps air and feels soft, making it useful in cooler conditions. Loopback or French terry uses visible loops on the inside and can feel less insulating and easier to layer across seasons.

Product titles sometimes use fleece loosely. Inspect close-up images and the composition rather than assuming every hoodie described as fleece has the same construction.

Fit changes warmth and layering

A loose or oversized hoodie leaves more room for a base layer and can trap air, but it may also let more cold air enter at the hem. A regular fit can sit more neatly under outerwear. Drop shoulders and wide sleeves add volume that may bunch inside a fitted jacket.

For a zip-through hoodie, consider whether you will wear it open, over a T-shirt or under a coat. Pullover styles reduce the front opening but are less adjustable as conditions change.

Check the construction details that GSM misses

Ribbed cuffs, hem recovery, seam finishing, zip quality and pocket reinforcement influence long-term wear. A high fabric weight cannot compensate for weak stitching or a zip that waves and catches.

For work use, review abrasion points, pocket shape and whether the hood interferes with other equipment. For casual use, pay attention to drawcord length, hood structure and how the garment keeps its shape after washing.

If the hoodie will be your outer layer, check for an explicit wind-resistant or water-resistant construction. Ordinary cotton and fleece hoodies should generally be treated as insulating casual layers rather than weatherproof shells.
